Brompton Foldable Bikes
Bromptons Brief
Our brief is no more than to make products which are functional and a pleasure to use. In particular, the bikes themselves should be as light as practical without compromising handling or safety, and the folded package has to be easy to carry and difficult to damage. Aesthetics are not a design consideration… although sound design usually looks good, and I think it's fair to say that this applies to the Brompton.
Bromptons Early Years
Brompton founder Andrew Richie first had the idea of producing folding bikes in 1975 but it wasn't until 1987 that full time production started from a railway arch in Brentford, West London. Sales gradually improved over the next few years and the company moved into new premises at Chiswick Park in 1993.
In April 1995 Brompton won the Queens award for export and in 1996 the German ADFC declared the Brompton 'Bike of the Year' and sales exploded.
Brompton Bikes Today
Today's models are a far cry from the 1980's MK1, small design changes, new manufacturing techniques and lightweight materials promise todays Brompton Folding Bike are top quality, lightweight titanium frame and in keeping with the Brompton trademark quality.
